EngagedMD

Fertility Clinic App for Patients

Overview

Problem

The patient web application had limited features: digital signature collection & learning modules. The users were not able to prioritize tasks at hand and the UI lacked robust support for all the devices.

Outcome

Streamline application allowed for easy prioritization of tasks that needed complication. Reworked activity types provided a foundation for the future growth of the application to work in tandem with the Fertility Clinic Staff app.

Understanding the problem

Why are we doing this?

1

Business Side

For the business to grow the application needs to be stable, features need to be launched with a regular cadence, and a proper research/design/development cycle.

The main objective was to rethink existing SaaS application for fertility clinic patients to ensure a foundation is created for a complete patient journey management.

2

Customer Side

Time is a precious commodity for all patients, not just in fertility. On top of the time constraints, fertility patients often deal with a myriad of emotional stressors.

Providing a streamlined, easily digestible experience could alleviate some of their patients' concerns by prioritizing items that need to be completed prior to the in-person visit.

Approach

Discovery

In collaboration with Co-CEOs, I conducted a thorough audit of our application. With a fully mapped-out application, it was important to establish the patients' mindset and a list of needs.

I've introduced Hotjar as the primary tool to gather anonymized data on the usage of the application, analyzed the UX bottlenecks, and deployed surveys, triggered at the critical points of the user journey to form a holistic map of user behavior.

Evaluation

Following the discovery, I needed to understand how users move through their journey to ensure the application is attuned to the real-world interactions between staff and patients.

A rough breadboarding exercise for Staff users has already provided an overview of all possible features and established a cohesive application architecture.

Ideate and Iterate

The initial wireframes and prototypes allowed for quick feedback from internal and external user groups. The feedback revealed gaps in the initial hypothesis which were addressed. The first visual designs were created using MUI to speed up development.

All initial activity types were mapped and designed with a mobile-first approach.

Layout

Building out the application

Once foundations were in place, the next goal was to layout the entire application - all screens, all devices, all interactions, and states.

Desisgn System

Consistent Design Language

Once stable, each component of the application was added to the design system. Unlike the staff application, the patient application was not complex, allowing to keep the design system simple, while allowing for growth.

The design system had a dual purpose: faster ideation on the design side and consistency in hand-off to the engineers.

Hand off and Launch

Working with engineering is a key part of any product designer’s day-to-day. Ensuring that developers know what is in scope while keeping in mind what’s to come allows for cohesion on the team and sound execution. The handoff consisted of a set of user stories with Figma assets embedded in JIRA. The capacity was evaluated by the entire product team looking not only several sprints ahead but also at the entire quarter.

Testimonial for Co-CEO
